T is for Tipi

We just got our Backyard Tipi delivered today, wow that was fast! I was so excited that I took everything out of the box right away, only to discover that it might be a little bigger than our living room has space for. Although it's permanent home will be out back it's just too wet for that today. This weekend we will hopefully build a platform with some free wood pallets we found via craigslist to keep it nice a dry. I am also thinking we should paint the bottom part of the tipi and maybe a little bit on the top to give it some color and to prevent it from wicking up the moisture. The tipi is really for our sons birthday party next month but I think I am just as excited as the kids are! I'll post some pretty little things I found on Etsy to decorate the tipi with and to wear to the party later. Of course I can't buy it all but a little fantasy shopping is always fun.

If you don't want to buy a tipi you can always try making your own (I made a smaller one for my oldest son a few years ago, super easy, pics later),

As easy as buying shoes online you can buy a little studio or guesthouse for the backyard or maybe as a small cabin for your land. I would love to have 5 or 10 of these Modern Cabana's on my dream lake front property to enjoy with friends and family, oh someday......

here are a few other prefab's worth checking out, but if you live in the Seattle area you should drive by Garden Solutions in downtown Bothell and check out their modern shed, it's about half the price of these and totally custom (the website sucks so you really need to go in person).

House Tour

Okay so it's just our house you're touring but I thought it would be fun to share what we have done to make our home more open and eco friendly. We bought our little cement block home back in 2001 and have been remodeling, adding on and knocking down ever since. The original footprint was 840 sqft with all the rooms closed off from one another, pretty typical for the day but very depressing. I think in some homes it's a nice layout but in ours it just made it feel smaller and totally dark. We decided to convert the garage into a family room/playroom, knock down as many walls as allowed and add on 500 sqft bringing us up to 1640 sqft. We used as many eco friendly materials as we could afford, we were able to offset some of the cost by doing a lot of the work ourselves. We were able to pick some $$$ eco friendly materials like a dual flush toilet by Toto, recycled glass tiles from Ann Sacks and some less glamorous items like recycled jeans insulation and low VOC paint from EcoHaus. Things that make me giddy but so do power tools. We are still planning on blowing out some windows and turning them into glass doors and building out the front porch this summer but we've come a long way from the little bunker we bought so long ago. Camping in Style

Architecture firm Olson Kundig helped Mazama homeowners get around some stiff permitting issues by affixing large wheels on all the Rolling Huts. Visitors can "camp" in one of the herds modern rooms or enjoy a hot cup of coffee at the on site diner. Each hut is equipped with a rustic bathroom but you can enjoy a hot shower and modern toilet in the community bathroom just a short walk away.
